Every Girl’s Best Friend and Worst Enemy: Black Leggings

November 25, 2013 by emily 24 Comments

If you know me, or even have seen me more than once, you probably know that I can’t live without black leggings. They’re my favorite, most comfortable piece of clothing and I don’t think I could get through winter without them! They enable me to get ready in less than 5 minutes and also stretch when I eat too much. What could be better?

However, as much as I love leggings, they can also be your worst enemy. Ladies, let’s all remember this one rule: THEY’RE NOT PANTS. You have to treat them like a thicker pair of tights and if you wouldn’t wear tights with a tshirt, don’t wear leggings with it either. Your top has to cover your back and front completely, otherwise you need to layer a longer tank underneath. We’ve all seen that girl that makes you want to tie your own jacket around her waist! For tops that aren’t long enough I have a Free People slip thats long so it covers everything. And they come in a bunch of colors, so for less than $30 you’ll get your money’s worth! Here are some of my favorite tops to wear with leggings this winter!

And here are some of my favorite leggings. Just remember that the cheaper they are, the sooner you’re going to have to replace them because they get thinner when you wash them!

Great post Emily. Thanks for all your suggestions of ‘long-enough’ tops. You have found some really nice ones to wear with leggings. Yes, there is nothing worse then seeing shorter tops paired with leggings. It’s like they have forgotten to put their skirt or shorts over the top of their leggings - it looks awful!! The free people slip is a great find and I love the jacket and boots you have suggested. Thanks 🙂

Love leggings and all of your suggestions!
Hate leggings as pants! That’s the worst!
Love your blog and your jewelry!
So many of the products I use are based on your recommendations, including wen and sultra wand! I always look forward to your posts!

Totally agree with this post! I can’t handle leggings as pants! As a long girl with a long torso, it’s so hard to find tops that are long enough. Thanks for the Free People slip suggestion!

These tanks are AH-mazing! Super soft, wash up great and are just the perfect length to scrunch up yet cover everything. I highly recommend these tanks…in EVERY color.

Emily, I love your blog! I’ve never ordered from topshop. I’m a xs/sm top and 25 pants what size would I need in the top shop shirt you recommended?

Emily you are completely right about the cheaper leggings. It’s absolutey worth it to splurge especially if they’re going to last! My Walmart and Target leggings can only take me so far! Hahaha! Thanks for the post em! Love you!

So being a plus size girl I stay away from leggings but love the look; I’ve recently lost 55lbs and 3-4 pants sizes. I’m becoming more comfortable venturing out in to new styles and will hopefully find the right shirt to accompany a pair of leggings where it doesn’t make me look like I’m wearing a tent!

I agree with summer smith about finding tops long enough for a long torso. Fortunately some online stores are stating the length in inches. Then you have to allow for shrinkage. I’m almost thinking short dress instead.

Emily- Great post! I have a question about the Free People Slip - Some of the reviewers say that it rides up too much. Do you recommend a tight or looser fit to prevent that?

I hope my daughter does not see this. She is in high school and the girls that age seem to think that “leggings as pants” is a totally OK look! I disagree. I know it will hurt her feelings if I show her this. What to do? I am so ready for the look to be over and done. I love leggings, but just think the behind needs to be covered.

    Emily,
Do you actually own this cardigan that you recommended? http://www.dailylook.com/p/Mile-High-Club/Tribal-Cocoon-Cardigan/93570.html?aaid=cj&utm_source=cj&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=cj

I’m usually an XS but it only comes in a small so I’m curious how it fits. You and I are just about the same size.

    Thanks!

    Hi Emily,

Just catching up on your blog now. Your resolution is to write more and mine is to read more! I don’t normally comment but I wanted to say that I love your style. I’m a tall lady (6’0″) and my biggest gripe is finding t-shirts that just aren’t long enough! This style is so perfect.

    Thank you for posting!
