If theres any time of day that I’m especially grateful to be single, it would have to be at bedtime when I take my makeup off. And not for the reason you’re thinking. I don’t turn into a troll. Unless you’re thinking of one of those super cute dolls with the rainbow hair and jewel on their belly. I’ll totally take that.

No. Its because any man would be appalled by how many cotton balls it takes to get my eye makeup off. I swear I really don’t even wear that much! Its only because my eyeliner is waterproof so its extra hard to take off; however, one would think Gene Simmons took over my bathroom after a KISS concert. And it never fails that no matter how many times I wipe if off, when I wake up I’m still going to have makeup under my eyes! Before you say I should think about not wearing so much makeup, I know I’m not the only one with this problem because I’ve had this same conversation with pretty much every one of my girlfriends. If you wear waterproof eyeliner (which I totally recommend), its going to take forever to get off!

Over the years I feel like I have tried every kind of eye makeup remover. Some I’ve loved. Some I’ve hated. But its so important to start with a clean face and eye every time you put on your makeup for so many reasons. First of them obviously being clear skin because that means less makeup! So the moral of the story is get a really good eye makeup remover and cotton balls in bulk.

And hide the evidence immediately. 🙂

  2. i swear my using coconut oil & a q-tip. it works wonders on waterproof and it doesn’t take much. it also is a great moisturizer for lashes!

  4. DEFINITELY try Clean Artiste by loreal. Its in a green bottle with a white cap. YOU WILL LOVE IT! It is the most amazing eye makeup remove I have ever used and you won’t wake up with makeup under your eye the next morning either!! TRY IT OUT hehe.

  6. Totally love Mary Kay eye makeup remover. My mom used it when I was growing up, so it became my natural go to in high school. It is hands down better than anything I’ve tried, and tons more effective than neutragena!

  7. I use a combo of baby shampoo, olive oil, and water. It’s so soothing and natural and takes everything off. Also, sometimes I wash my fave with an olive oil/castor oil mix and the make up comes right off. yay au natural!

  9. I’m also one who wears waterproof eyeliner AND mascara so it’s always been tricky! But I’ve found that using your finger instead of a cotton ball works wonders for some reason. I just dip my clean finger into my eye makeup remover (Neutrogena oil free makeup remover) and rub my eyes gently then towards the end when most is loosened and removed I then use a cotton ball with a little remover on it.

  11. I used to use the Neutrogena eye makeup remover, but when I went abroad and didn’t bring it with me, a friend suggested using vaseline on a q-tip - it’s seriously the best idea in the world. It comes off so easily and is extremely gentle, not to mention very inexpensive, and a little really does go a long way! I’m never going back to anything else!

  22. I second what Tana said! Coconut oil.. Then if you have to use quite a bit you know you are saturating your eyes with harmful chemicals but something totally natural! Bonus is.. It makes the skin around your eyes soft and moisturized!:)

  23. Recently started using 100% organic grapeseed oil and I love it. My waterproof stuff comes right off and this oil doesn’t leave you greasy or cause breakouts - actually prevents them. I also use a light layer of it under my night cream.

  30. Vasoline on a tissue after washing face (same ideas as coconut oil) - takes EVERYTHING off and doesn’t leave eyelids with redness like some makeup removers do. Better than any high end makeup removers I have tried, and a small tub lasts forever.

  34. I use Jojoba Oil. Wet a cotton pad with a little water, use a little jojoba oil, and everything comes right off..and it’s all natural 🙂

  35. The virgin coconut oil only works for some. I have heard rave reviews, but for many it can make the skin extremely oily. I have dry skin…and after one day of using it, my skin became very oily for an entire week and caused a horrible breakout. If you plan on trying it, just do it when you dont have any big events.

  38. The absolute best eye makeup remover BY FAR is Almay’s oil-free eye makeup remover pads! They are literally labeled America’s #1 eye makeup remover brand. The best part about them is that the product is already on pads (as well as towelettes and eraser sticks) so there is no need for those cotton balls in bulk! 😉 One pad per eye is usually sufficient for me, but if you’re wearing a heavier eye for the night I would recommend using the towelettes. I am also a contact wearer and these will not irritate your eyes! You should be able to find these in any of your local pharmacy stores such as CVS and Walgreens. Make sure you get the oil-free kind as there are different options. Good luck ladies! 😉

  39. What eyeliner have you found that you and like and is waterproof? My daughter and I both wear contacts and our eyes water a lot, so we are always trying to find the best products that are waterproof in eyeliner and mascara.

  42. I’d worn eye makeup for years, and then became a professional actor, so finding the best way to take it off has been key! I swear by cream eye makeup removers because they do the job really well so there’s less need to pull and tug at my skin, which as I get older I realize is VERY important! Also, they don’t leave an oily residue! So, my favorites are Estée Lauder and Makeup Forever from Sephora!

  43. Hi Emily! I always take my eye makeup off without cotton balls. I feel like the cotton balls absorb most of the moisture and then hardly any gets onto my skin. I use the liquid bottle eye makeup remover (mine is the Lancome one). After I shake it to mix the oils, I just put my finger in to get it wet and then rub it over and around my eye. I then use a cotton ball or tissue to wipe all the smeared black off. Sometimes I do it again if I had more makeup on then normal or just to make sure all the black is off. My husband always cracks up because I look like a racoon- really it is a little scary looking, but it is the quickest way to get eye makeup off!

  44. Bliss lid wash usually takes 1-2 flat cotton rounds and the bottle has lasted months. For the extra stubborn makeup that just doesn’t want to go away I actually took my eye dr’s recommendation and just use Johnson and Johnson baby wash. It’s gentle on the eyes and its super cheap.

  45. Ya know, I think I find the Maybelline one a bit too greasy! I love the fact that it’s moisturizing, but I can’t seem to keep the remover from getting in my nose and T-zone area… I’m just waiting for the inevitable breakout :/

  47. I use both waterproof mascara and waterproof eyeliner. I used Lancôme for years and also used MAC for a while until I discovered Lumene. It works just as well and it’s only $6.99 at CVS. I haven’t seen it anywhere else. It’s made in Finland. I definitely recommend it!

  50. I wear heavy, waterproof eyeliner and mascara every day and the only product that has ever worked for me is the Neutrogena makeup remover cleansing towelettes. They’re amazing! And if your makeup is really stubborn, you can put some Pond’s cold cream cleanser on and then use the Neutrogena wipe to remove the makeup and cream cleanser. Thanks for blogging, Emily!   51. My aunt taught me years ago, as I sat watching her put on makeup before going on dates that Vaseline is the BEST eye remover there is! It takes it right off and doesn’t burn or irritate your eyes! I use Benefit They’re Real Mascara and waterproof eyeliner so it can sometimes seem like a major feat to get my eyes ready for bed but I’m telling you…Vaseline on a cotton square is like a gift from above on those late nights where all you want to do is hit the bed but know that your eyes will hate you in the morning!

  52. I use the Almay eye makeup remover pads - one for each eye. Then, I rub Cetaphil (for dry skin) all over my face, including my eye area. This loosens up anything left over that the Almay pads didn’t remove. Before rinsing off the Cetaphil, I use a Q-tip around my eye area to remove any remaining eye makeup. Then I rinse and pat dry. I grab another q-tip and apply Kiehl’s eye cream with it close to my lashes to catch whatever makeup residue is still left.

    Now that I have described the process, it does not sound efficient at all!

  54. Hey guys! I love using two things. When I have heavy eye makeup I go in first with some Clinique take the day off makeup remover before washing my face. My favorite makeup remover wipes are the ones by PureDerm. They come in delicious scents like rose, green tea, and lavendar. They’re also super affordable (30 tissues) for $2.95. I’m a makeup artist based in LA so I can find them at Naimie’s or Nigel’s, but I’m sure you can do some hunting and find them at a local industry beauty supply too. They are a staple in my kit 🙂

  55. I absolutely agree with the other MK girls. I LOVE Mary Kay eye makeup remover and am so happy my mom introduced me to it. Nothing I have ever used even comes close. My favorite long-lasting lip color is by Revlon (even in comparison to the YSL I bought after you posted- I liked the feel but it didn’t stay as long), but it stays so well that it is impossible to get off with anything but Mary Kay.

  56. Dermalogica precleanse is my wonder product for removing waterproof makeup. You don’t even need cotton pads, you just gently massage it in and everything magically dissolves. I then follow up with a clarisonic cleanse using dermalogica special cleansing gel. I used to get major congestion around my chin but this double cleanse process has cleared it all up.

  57. MAC Cleanse off oil is AMAZING! Doesnt break me out and really helps to breakdown not only waterproof liner and mascara but also my foundation! My skin comes out totally clean and moisturized! THE BEST!!!

  63. I just bought Sephora’s Supreme Cleansing Oil, which is a dupe for MAC’s Cleanse Off Oil. It does a fantastic job of getting makeup off - I no longer wake up with raccoon eyes! The only problem is that the oil occasionally clouds your vision after you use it. However, I love it so much that it’s worth it!

  64. I’m still experimenting with the right eye makeup remover but I use Ocusoft Lid Scrub Foam after I’m done to get it really clean. It’s for people with eye infections I think. Never had one, but I love how “fresh” my eye area feels afterwards!

  65. I have the same problem! I don’t cake on the eye makeup but I do love eyeliner and mascara and use a combination of WP and non waterproof liners. My trick is to wash my face first with Lancome’s oil cleanser Huile Douceur which removes a good amount of my eye makeup. It is very gentle on the eyes. Then I use a q-tip (well actually about 4) with Lancome’s Bifacil to remove my mascara and eye liner that remains. Using a q-tip allows more precise removal of the top and bottom of the lashes and it saves a ton on product usage! Then I finish with my Yves Saint Laurent Forever Youth Liberator cleanser and Clarisonic! Yes, I use two cleansers and it takes me a good 10 minutes to properly remove my makeup and apply all of my skincare but its worth it!!!

  66. I use waterproof mascara and am always on the lookout for a great makeup remover. I do love the Lancome Bi-Facil but I’ve also had really great luck with a drugstore brand called Annabelle. I use their oily makeup remover pads and it’s absolutely incredible! The price point ($6) isn’t bad, either. I would highly recommend!

  67. After years of using Maybelline’s light blue cap makeup remover I received a gift of Ahava makeup remover last year and it works perfectly. I use their face and body creams and love how they work and feel..their foot cream is incredible, especially during the winter months..try it.. nothing beats it .. but hope to be gifted with the Le Mer creams this Mother’s Day..   71. I wash my face and when I put on my moisturizer or lotion it takes tht right off… I use a qtip to get the detailed parts off too when they won’t come off. It also gives my eyes that moisture they need to not feel dried out. I even use a qtip and lotion if I make a mistake when putting on my make up, since I use waterproof eyeliner.

  81. Olive Oil! Or Mix Olive Oil with baby oil! Massage it around your closed eyes with your fingers till it’s all loosened into raccoon eyes, THEN wipe with a cotton ball or really soft tissue. Easy and inexpensive, also removes eyelashes if you are wearing them 🙂

  94. Hullo…..hasn’t anyone heard of Jane Iredell’s Magic Mitt??? No chemicals required…the microfiber (or whatever) technology takes off EVERYTHING. And the best thing is…the darned thing is washable and reusable. I’ve had mine for over a year! Well…I left one in a hotel in Berlin and had to buy another one…so I guess technically I’ve had two for over a year. They are FANtastic.

    My favorite mascara essentially is two separate mascaras in one bottle (Mac haut an naughty I think it’s called? Which is amazing…I have no eyelashes and this does wonders!). Anyway, the thing is, it’s so hard to get off and I have the same problem. I’ve tried numerous kinds but I hate how oily most are. I stumbled across the Almay wipes (in the purple package) and they are great. You can use them on your whole face (there is nothing worse then washing your face a realizing your foundation is still on…not to mention there is black everywhere from your eye makeup) what I also love is that you can just use all areas of the wipe so you don’t need a thousand cotton rounds. I’ve tried all kinds of make up remover face wipes and these by far take the cake. Me and my mom swear by them. Maybe give them a try(;

    I use the neutrogena oil free make-up wipes for face and then my jojoba oil for my eyes, I tried the expert eyes and my eyes were SO dry itchy and hurt so bad after using it once I stopped using it. But my jojoba oil I use for SO MANY different things, its amazing stuff! I recommend that! =)

  108. I always use Neutrogena makeup removing wipes (the ones in the blue pack). They are great for removing waterproof eyeliner and mascara. It is so much more convenient than using a ton of cotton balls and they don’t burn your eyes!

  109. I used to buy the very expensive Lancôme makeup remover until a friend told me about using Walmart brand (Equate) lavender scented baby oil. It’s less than $2 a bottle and I just pour it into one of my old Lancôme bottles. Works perfectly!

  112. I use organic coconut oil and LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I bought the Whole Foods brand. It’s only about $10 for the whole jar and lasts forever! After I’m done rubbing the oil over my eyelids and eyelashes, I seriously have two giant black circles from all my makeup coming off… It’s terrifying the first couple of times you see it until you get used to it! Definitely not something you would want your man to see EVER. But then I just take a tissue and wipe it off and EVERYTHING comes off. I think it is pretty good and moisturizing for your skin too! xoxo

  118. I would advise to use a flat cotton pad rather than a cotton ball- it gives you more surface. Apply a bit of your eye makeup remover onto it, and then apply it against your eye and let it sit for about 20 seconds. This will allow the remover to loosen the makeup for you, so there will be less tugging and rubbing. Then, gently swipe away the eye. Repeat until clean 🙂

While I thought I might have to venture to a department store to buy an eye makeup remover that cost more than I made in a week of slaving away at my mall’s popcorn stand, I got lucky and found the perfect one at my local drug store! The Clean & Clear Soothing Eye Makeup Remover comes in at under $10 for a 162ml bottle and each bottle lasts me a few months of almost daily use. You just shake it up, get some on a cotton pad and press it over your closed eye for 10 seconds and presto! Just wipe it away to reveal a makeup free eye! If I’m wearing waterproof mascara I sometimes need to gently go over the lashes a few more time, but I never need to scrub or do anything that would irritate my sensitive eyes.

  120. Two words that will change your life, trust me! NORWEX CLOTH!!!! There’s a company called Norwex which (no I am not affiliated with) but they sell chemical free cleaning cloths that clean to 100% bacteria free with only water, and the cloth. They make a makeup remover cloth which I use every night for waterproof eyeliner and mascara and it is an absolute GODSEND!!!! I have tried EVERYTHING and nothing is even remotely comparative. No oily, greasy products and no pile of cotton balls and QTips in the garbage. Just wet the cloth, wipe off the makeup and you are done. It’s amazing. You will absolutely love it.

  122. I LOVE Albolene moisturizing cleanser! You can find it at a drug store( I found mine at CVS). I use it to remove my eye makeup. One jar last me a year. It’s in a white container with blue top. It is amazing! You should try it. It’s about $11

    I am the EXACT same way about my waterproof eye makeup and I have the answer to ANY girls problem in this area….

    BARE MINERALS WATERPROOF EYE MAKEUP REMOVER
    This stuff was invented by God himself. Use it once and you will see what I mean…
    You will be down from 8 cotton balls to 2. To get EVERYTHING off! And most eye makeup removers say they remove waterproof.. But you still need to scrub off half of your eyelashes to get it off.. NOT with this stuff! And for reference, I have tried EVERY other product there is! This is the part of my day I cringe thinking about!

  124. For everyday makeup, I’ve used Pond’s forever and ever. Even on my clients (I’m a makupe artist).

    But the very, very best eye makeup remover, hands down for that tough waterproof eye makeup, is Make Up For Ever’s SENS’EYES Hands down. I am a makeup artist and bought/tested the product on myself after a MUFE show last year. It is unreal. I highly recommend it to everyone.

  127. I also LOVE the Make Up For Ever SENS’EYES. I have eyelash extensions that I love ever so much and can’t go without them so it is very hard to find an eye makeup remover that isn’t going to ruin my lashes and that works well. I am a product consultant at Sephora and have tried so many different things until I found this. With eyelash extensions, you are supposed to use water-based products over oil-based because the oil will remove the glue. I just put the tiniest dot of remover on a q-tip and it is instantly gone! It seriously works like a dream. I recommend it to everyone whether you have sensitive eyes or not. Definitely gets the job done!

  128. Instead of using cotton balls, try using Renee Rouleau’s Toning Cloths. They don’t soak up as much product as cotton balls so your products last MUCH longer before you need to replenish! They are life changing!

  129. I swear by the up & up (target’s generic brand) liquid eye makeup remover. It’s supposed to be their version of the neutrogena oil free eye makeup remover. I consider it to be even better. It’s a great product and at a great price. I really recommend it; and being a past Lancôme addict.. That says a lot. 🙂
